I share something in common with literally millions of Americans.Computers are transforming my life.
This was hardly the case when I first began teaching (on the college level) years ago. But I now grade papers, communicate with students, give exams and record grades on line. Instead of xeroxing articles and handing them out to students, I just post a URL on my web site and they can download this material themselves. In a way, this transition makes things easier. But it also makes them harder, forcing teachers to evolve instead of simply delivering the same lectures year after year.
My work as a journalist has followed virtually the same trajectory; moving towards my doing virtually everything on line. My first job as a jouranlist was doing community reporting for an afternoon daily. Before long, however, it, being an afternoon publiation, was deemed out of date and eventually closed. And I then journeyed into writing for more specialized audiences (for business publications). Now, I am writing for an online publication and genuinely looking forward to the challenge.
As my world has changed, I have become less certain about things. Granted, I was never a believer in easy answers, understanding that hard questions cannot be answered in 25 words or less. But I am just beginning to understand the degree of complexity that surrounds me. And my lack of certainty might be for the better even if it doessometimes lead to vertigo.
